Health & Safety Officer

Salary: Competitive; dependant on experience

Location: Hinckley, Lutterworth and Doncaster

Primary Role

Primary responsibility for promoting and maintaining high standards of Health, Safety and Environments procedures, encouraging a zero injuries culture. Developing and implementing risk assessments (including COSHH and PUWER assessments) and maintain the first aid register effectively. Conducting and/or reviewing health and safety inductions for new starters, implementing and updating health and safety policies and conduct internal and external audits ensuring compliance up to date.


Critical responsibilities & duties

  • Developing and implementing risk assessments (including COSHH and PUWER assessments),

  • Responsibility for handling of all internal and externally generated NCRs, ensuring a robust root cause analysis is carried out and appropriate corrective and preventative actions plans are implemented and in place,

  • Liaise with managers and staff throughout the organisation to ensure the quality management system is functioning properly; where appropriate advising on changes and how to implement them and provide training, tools and techniques to enable others to achieve quality standards,

  • Conducting health and safety inductions for new starters,

  • Implementing and updating health and safety policies,

  • Conducting internal and external audits ensuring compliance up to date; establish a full programme of documented health & safety inspections, audits and checks advising management of any improvements required,

  • Analysis, promotion and identification of areas for improvement,

  • Implementation, promotion and adherence to site policy and procedure,

  • Cross functional interaction (Transport / Warehouse / HR / Admin),

  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment to ensure adherence to site H&S policy,

  • Plan, implement, monitor and review protective and preventative safety measures,

  • Provide personal protective equipment, instruction in its use, maintenance and limitations,

  • Identifying hazards, performing risk assessments and implementing control measures to ensure the risk of injury is reduced or eliminated,

  • developing, implementing and reviewing safe work practices and procedures,

  • Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policies,

  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks including H&S Toolbox Talks,

  • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities,

  • Ensuring all staff are aware of fire/emergency evacuation,

  • Assist Warehouse Managers with ensuring the full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained,

  • Record incidents and accidents and produce statistics for managers,

  • Carry out and co-ordinate accident / incident investigations, reporting RIDDOR to the HSE when required,

  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the business,

  • Ensure equipment is used safely as per instruction manual.


Candidate Profile

  • Minimum of three years’ health and safety management experience in a fast-moving distribution centre or logistics organisation,

  • NEBOSH qualified,

  • Experience of BRC Storage and Distribution preferable,

  • Experience in compliance and PUWER assessments,

  • Ability to grasp new ideas, develop and implement better working practices and methods;

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in order to explain processes to a range of people and to give presentations to groups,

  • Be able to use own initiative and work as part of a team,

  • Experience of working in similar position is essential,

  • Can do’ attitude / provide solutions / problem solving,

  • Strong-willed and independent, confident to challenge Directors/Senior Management, Persuasive and influential, but in a ‘consultative’ approach style to win confidence.


    Essential experience and qualifications

  • relevant NEBOSH qualification.

Salary: £12.50 ph

Location: Lutterworth & Doncaster

Experienced, professional LGV C / C+E drivers required. Carrying out RDC deliveries, store deliveries & customer collections. Excellent rates of pay & uniform included. Various shift start times and patterns available.
